CD Projekt Red to start work on Cyberpunk 2077 sequel in 2023
Project Orion – CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 sequel – won’t even begin development until after next year.
The Polish studio CD Projekt Red has the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 among its future projects, but has acknowledged that it will take time to arrive, since they have not yet started working on it.
CD Projekt Red announced in October the Orion project, a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 with which they seek to demonstrate “all the power and potential of the universe” of this video game, but they did not provide more information.
In a new meeting with investors, on the occasion of the results of the third quarter of 2022, the president and CEO of the studio, Adam Kicinski, explained that they hope to start working at Orion next year.
“After launching Cyberpunk: Phantom Liberty, we will accelerate our work on the Orion project, which is being carried out by the Boston studio,” he detailed. Specifically, he has referred to the conceptual works, “that do not count as pre-production”, and that focus on the internal language of development and a more formal part of cost allocation.
“Formally speaking, pre-production will probably not start next year as this is the first phase of development,” confirmed the manager, who reiterated that in 2023 they will focus on conceptualization.
In the same session, Kicinski pointed out that they have reinforced the teams that are working on Sirius and Polaris, two of the projects that are part of The Witcher saga: the first has 60 developers while the second has more than 150.
Before CD Projekt begins its development of these six new games, they’re currently occupied with completing the remaster of their iconic Witcher 3 game for next-gen consoles. That remaster is destined to release this year. Once that’s released, they’ll be looking to roll out Cyberpunk 2077’s first DLC named Phantom Liberty which will release in 2023.
